The top reason most people self-publish is that the barriers to acceptance by any traditional publishing company are steep. You compete with thousands of people trying to get published. The unfortunate reality is that publishing houses determine their publishing goals a year in advance – if you don’t fit into their plan, as brilliant a writer as you might be, you will never make it onto their publishing schedule.

The second reason people in the know are choosing to self-publish is because even if you are accepted by a publishing house, you are still expected to do a significant portion of the marketing. This comes as a huge shock to most first-time authors. Not only do they have to become an instant marketing expert if they want to really sell their books, they are subject to a publishing house’s appearance and publicity schedule.

Ultimately, this leads to the realization that you are doing all the work and only earning a fraction of the proceeds from the sale of your book!
